This is my Timex Weekender.  It's always up for a drive.  It's been one of my favorite "go to" watches for a long time due to its clear and readable dial.  The bezel on this one has tachymeter markings and those are always fun for an extra bit of sportiness.

TGIF! Now that the workweek is done, what's your favorite watch for banging around on the weekend?  Do you need something rugged or something casual?  Hard rock or yacht rock? Do you favor casual "weekender" watches from brands like Timex or Citizen?  So many questions.  Don't get stressed.  It's Friday.

This Timex Weekender has been one of my favorites for a long time.  Most Timex Weekenders have plain bezels, but not this one.  It has tachymeter functions.  I found this one at Walmart and, within a few months, the brand must have unified their Weekender standards and all the Timex Weekenders had plain metal bezels.  Sometimes watch models don't last for long.  They get supplanted by new models all the time for unknown reasons.  Sometimes you just have to get when the getting is good.

Replacing a Watch Battery on a Timex Weekender

or . . . Reviving a Zombie Watch

The leaves are beginning to turn, darkness is falling upon the land at an ever earlier hour, and the wind howls through the trees.  Once again, it's fall and Halloween approaches.  The line between the living and the dead will soon be wafer thin.  It's a good time to open the crypt of dead wristwatches and dig up an old favorite.  Behold, here is my trusty old Timex Weekender with Tachymeter markings.  It's an old favorite, but it has lain dead in my watch box for several months.

 The Guts of a Timex Weekender!

To revive a Timex Weekender, all you need is a new watch battery.  The case back calls for a CR-2016 battery to serve as the heart and soul of the timepiece.  Perhaps it's not surprising that it has such a commonplace battery to keep the ticker running?  If you'd like to rip the heart out of each of your dead watches, you can buy a bulk pack of batteries on Amazon.

To perform the actual operation, all you need is a small little screwdriver to pop the back right off.  You just have to probe the back of the watch and find a vulnerability.

 Then, you can insert your blade and pry to show everyone the insides of your Timex Weekender!

Then, you just carefully remove the old watch battery and replace with your new one.  Be careful to notice the various metal contacts around the edge of the battery compartment.  Then gently insert your replacement battery.  Once your "procedure" is completed, press the caseback back into place.  Your watch will live on for a few more years again.  Then it will die and you can revive it once more!

The new Timex Weekender watches bring an element of refinement and style to everyday watches.

(This review is a reprint of a review that I published several years ago on Yahoo.  However, the Timex Weekender continues to sell well.)

Timex is known for reliable, no nonsense, wristwatches that are sold for reasonable prices. The new Timex Weekender watches exemplify those sensibilities, but bring an element of refinement and style to everyday watches. Most of the Timex Weekender watches have a slightly preppy Northeastern look. However, one version (model T2N638) has a leather band and tachymeter markings around the bezel. In terms of styling, this model lies somewhere between preppie-dom and more serious men's watches. At Target, this Timex is well-priced at $34.99.

The face of this Timex is clean and white. It provides a strong contrast to the large black numerals that are traditionally placed at five minute intervals. Small but readable numerals (13 through 24) set inside the primary numerals aid in keeping military time in accordance to the 24 hour clock. The 15 on the military dial has been replaced by a small window that reveals the date in the same font. Timex keeps the fact that you need help remembering the date a private matter between you and your wristwatch. This watch is easy to read without being an "easy reader."

A Traditional Timex Weekender with Strap Set

On a daily basis, this Timex Weekender is a practical watch. The crown pulls out to two positions: one for setting the date and the other for setting the time. It is a small touch, but it sure beats manually rotating the hands through about 60 revolutions to set the date. The leather band is comfortable, but a little narrow for my tastes with 18mm lugs and a tapering shape. The narrow leather band allows the watch to rotate a little on my wrist. I'm debating whether to replace the leather band with a more secure canvas or black rubber variety. My wrists are a little less than 8 and a 1/2 inches in diameter and I had 2 more holes available on the band.

Since I was unable to reach 400 miles per hour on a public highway, I was unable to fully test the tachymeter. Basically, small markings on the bezel allow the wearer to measure how fast they are going. To use, you wait until the second hand reaches 12 o'clock and pull the crown. Then you travel to a measured mile and push the crown in when you pass the marker beginning the mile. When you've travelled to the end marker for the mile, you pull the crown again. The second hand will line up with markings on the bezel to indicate your speed. For example, a mile in 45 seconds minute is 80 miles per hour. If your family car is really fast, a 9 second mile is 400 miles per hour.

Overall, the tachymeter version of the Timex Weekender is an affordable, practical, and stylish watch.

A Guide to the Affordable Men's Watches of the Classical Revival

Classic Watches for the Common Man

According to the WatchTime 2012 Buyers Guide magazine, there is renewed interest in simple, basic, elegant timepieces that focus on the essential function of telling time. The magazine called it the classical revival. To some degree, they said the classical revival is a reaction to large, boisterous, timepieces that sport huge cases and oversized dials. For prestigious Swiss watch makers the test of design and craftsmanship has always been getting reliable mechanical functions into an aesthetically pleasing and slim watch case.

Venerable watchmakers like Zenith and Vacheron-Constantin have released watches in recent years that mimic their classic models of the 1950s and 60s. The Zenith Elite Ultra Thin is a simple elegant watch with a round face, baton markers, and a small seconds hand sub-dial. The Vacheron Constantin Historiques line includes the round Ultra Fine 1968 and the square Ultra Fine 1955. Both sport simple graceful faces with minimal markings and complex mechanical mechanisms beneath the surface. These high end watches are made by craftsmen working to the most exacting standards. They are heirlooms to be passed from generation to generation in some of the world's most elite families.

While the high end watches of Vacheron Constantin are out of reach for most consumers since they are price between $20,000 to $30,000, there are many classically-styled quartz watches for the rest of us in the marketplace. While classic watches may not have their own shopping network television shows, they can be found in nearly every local department store. Here are five of my favorite affordable classic watches for men:

1. Bulova Classic Quartz Silver Dial Watch. Bulova makes some very accurate and sophisticated quartz watches. At $400 or $500 the Bulova Precisionist line is a marvel of modern design. But, the venerable company also makes many traditional quartz dress watches that are perfect for no nonsense business attire. My $99 Bulova (Model 96B168) has a slightly technological look due to a subtle grid pattern underlying the dial. Other models have a sunburst design.

2. Fossil Ansel Vintage Style Watch. If you are of Generation X, you probably remember the watches your father and grandfather wore. They were simple, fairly, slim, and they had plain faces and hash marks on the hours. In short, they were attractive, minimalist, and superbly functional. Fossil brings that look back in a more contemporary quartz package with a larger face more in keeping with today's fashion. The retro look of the Fossil Ansel works well.

3. Pulsar Men's Analog Dress Watch.  Silver on silver is one of the coolest color combinations on any man's watch. My old Pulsar does the job well. It's cool, competent, and perfect for job interviews. A watch doesn't have to scream for attention. Sometimes it can better serve you by standing competently in the background and adding to your aura of competence. Of course, in the right light, the dial of my Pulsar looks much like the dial of the more expensive, automatic, Ebel Classic 100.

 

4. Timex Weekender. Simple. Readable. Indiglo. Preppy. The $35 to $45 Timex Weekender looks like the watch you'd wear at your summer place in the Hamptons. It offers tons of preppy practicality in a non-snooty package. It's an affordable classic. Plus, the Swiss don't have Indiglo backlighting at one thousand times the price.

5. Armitron Diamond Men's Analog Dress Watch. Of course, not all classical watches are plain and functional. Some achieve a dramatic look with an accent jewel. For example, most Movados have a timeless elegance. At a sub-$100 price point, you might take a look at the Armitron Diamond series of watches. Mine has a deep brown face, accented with golden batons marking each hour, and a tiny diamond chip at 12 o'clock. It looks great, but not necessarily rich.

Classical designs have never gone away. They've just been waiting for you to stop playing SCUBA Steve, Racer X, and Johnny Fighter Pilot. If you are ready for a simple, elegant, timepiece that tells the time and looks professional, your classic watches are waiting.

My Favorite Timex Watches for Everyday Wear

When it comes to watches, I have lots of slightly dressy watches for the office.  They have interesting designs and they tend to catch the eye.  They lend interest to my work day and sometimes get noticed by co-workers.  But, when I come home, they come off and take positions on top of my dresser.

I don't want to get them nicked up and battered.  Sometimes, they've gotten uncomfortable over the course of a workday.  When I get home I invariably reach for a bang around watch and--9 times out of 10--I reach for a Timex.  They are inexpensive, comfortable, rugged, and stylish.  At least, I like the way that they look.

Here are four of my very favorite "bang-around" Timex watches:

1. The Timex Expedition Core Resin.  Do you love those exotic commando dive watches that can handle 300 meters of depth and excel on raids in low light conditions?  Me too.  Do you $1500 to blow on a watch?  Me neither.  Are you a commando?  Me neither.  But, the Timex Expedition Rugged Core Analog Field Watch / T49831 / lets me daydream. This watch isn't perfect. The bezel doesn't turn and it is only water resistant to 50 meters. But, this watch looks totally cool.  It also has Indiglo lighting for those low-light adventures.

2. Timex Expedition Vintage Metal.  Of course, sometimes I want to be a bit more low key.  The Timex Men's T49891 Expedition Metal Field Brown Leather Strap Watch pays homage to the average G.I. It looks like it could have liberated Europe. But, it also looks great with my "Crocodile Hunter" shirt.

3.  Timex Weekender.  When it's time for a watch that is a little less intense, I like to wear my Timex Men's T2N637KW Weekender Sport Brown Leather Strap Watch . It's a great looking watch that is very comfortable and very easy to read.  I think it would go very well with a house in the Hamptons or on Cape Cod.

4.  Timex Elevated Classic.  When it comes to the perfect balance of form, function, and readability, I really like the Timex Men's T2N695 Elevated Classics Dress Sport Collection Black Leather Strap Watch.  The leather band is a tad wider than the one on the Weekender, too.

The Timex Weekender

If you are looking for a cool watch for younger people, check out the Timex Weekender.  It's a great watch for preppies.  You can buy extra interchangeable straps in all kinds of colors.  Here is the basic watch for $34.99 at Target.  You can see some of the variety in strap designs as well.

A Rainbow of Watch Colors

Happy Father's Day.  Today, I'm glad that my father set my fashion sense firmly on masculine ground.  In my world, there are really only four colors for a watch strap or bracelet:  silver, gold, black, or brown.  I've got one dark blue watch and I know it is a man's watch because it says Timex IronMAN right on the front.



But, today many people must feel differently.  It's o.k.  We live in a diverse culture and the idea of a proper watch is changing.  Men can now get watches in a veritable rainbow of watch case and watch band colors.  There are really bright reds now.  You won't lose this red Casio G-Shock anywhere!



Yellow used to be an unheard of color for a men's watch, but now you can get yellow watches.  This Zippo watch is a men's watch.  It's for outdoor adventures.  If you are adventuring outdoors with this watch and have an accident, the rescue helicopter should be able to find you.



Zoo York has gone green with this affordable ana-digital watch.  But, at least, it looks like a rugged manly watch.  You could be a forest ranger with this watch.




Perhaps this is just part of the trend towards unisex watches.  It's getting hard to tell which watches are for men and which watches are "boyfriend" watches for women.  The "Lodown Watch" by Nixon looks like it is intended for people who want to work with Microsoft Excel all the time!  But, it is actually for surfers who want to keep track of tides at 200 beaches around the world.




This colorful men's watch trend is a fashion movement that I'm just not too sure about.  Maybe I should just get a bunch of different colors on one watch band?

Timex Weekender Gift Set at Kohl's

I spotted this Timex Weekender gift set with interchangeable straps at Kohl's a few days ago.  It's a great preppy watch.  Since the color of the watch strap really sets the style and tone for each of these watches, the interchangeable strap set makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, the last time I tried a Timex Weekender with a canvas strap, the strap was a bit too short for my wrist.  For less than $60, this silver-tone watch set also has the makings of a good "boyfriend" watch for women.  Women may find the big dial and preppy colors appealing.

Just Get Him a Timex Already!

Stop agonizing!  You can just get him a Timex.  They make plenty of perfectly respectable watches and they don't break the budget!  I love my Weekender!  It's easy to read.  It has the date.  It lights up at night with a simple press of the crown.  It's only about $35 or so.  It makes a great stocking stuffer watch.

Watches for Preppies!

Preppy Watches like Lacoste, Izod, Timex, and Daniel Wellington

Remember preppies?  Some might think they are a throwback to the 80s, but their style never really went out of fashion.  Instead, it grew up and became part of America's business casual wardrobe.  Today, the preppy look isn't confined to snooty prep schools or Ivy League college campuses, you are quite likely to see the Lacoste crocodile logo in the cube next to yours in a corporate office tower.

Watches are an important part of the preppy look.  They can be simple traditional automatics with a leather band or colorful watches with iconic graphics. I recently saw lots of Lacoste watches at my local Macy's store. You might also consider Daniel Wellington watches.

However, you can find lots of nice preppy watches at far lower price points.  For example, the Timex Weekender is always an appropriate choice and looks much classier than it's low price tag.

In 2024, I've been finding lots of great looking Izod watches on sale at Burlington stores.  If you look around a bit, you won't see many popped collars on golf shirts, but there are still some great preppy watches being offered by Nautica, US Polo, Timex, Izod, Lacoste, Daniel Wellington, and Tommy Hilfiger!

You've seen my newest old Timex; now check out my newest new Timex.  Timex has recently introduced it's Weekender series of men's analog watches.  They have a touch of preppy sophistication that would look right at home in the Hamptons, Cape Cod, Rehobeth, Nags Head, or Destin.  Since Target had them at an attractive price, I couldn't resist.  However, I upped the ante from the canvas straps of most Weekender watches and chose the Timex Weekender Tachymeter watch with a leather band.  I think you'll agree that it is a beautiful watch.
