A Watch for Father's Day

It isn't too early to start shopping for Father's Day and a watch often makes the perfect gift. But, getting the right watch is a process, and there are a lot of things to think about in buying a watch.  When you are buying a watch as a gift, you have to think about the recipient's tastes and preferences.  Here are some key things to think about when buying a watch as a Father's Day gift:

Military Style Watches at Target

The vintage military look is in when it comes to watches.  Pioneered by high end makers like Bell & Ross, military-style watches are rugged looking and easy to read.   Unfortunately, Bell & Ross watches carry a high price tag that isn't prudent for every watch buyer.  However, many watch makers pay homage through their own contemporary designs.  I recently saw these Mossimo military style watches at Target.  They have that vintage military look for about $20.

This Mossimo watch has a canvas strap and very bold hash marks to indicate the hours.

Of course, if these low cost military-style watches, don't fit the bill, you can always spring for something like a Timex Expedition Scout.

Timex Expedition Military Field Watch

On Monday, I had the day off and I tried on a Timex Expedition Military Field Watch at Walmart.  The watch (shown below) has a stainless steel case, a small date window, and numerals denoting the minutes rather than the hours.  It has a cool vintage look.  Most importantly, it had enough band length to fit me with a decent amount to spare.  I'm not sure that the band is actually made of leather.  But, it is an attractive and rugged material.  This Timex is model T498749J and comes up almost any time you search for Timex Military.  For Father's Day, this watch might make a good choice.  Of course, my own dad is an expansion band kind of guy.

You can get this Timex watch here at Kohl's for $65 and, at least for now (5/14/2013), it looks like they have a Buy One, Get One Half-Off Deal going --

The Rhino Watch by Marc Ecko

This Marc Ecko Rhino watch is one of the coolest gifts that I got at Christmas.  It has a cross-hatched motif that reminds me of the diamond plate that you might see on the tool box of a workman's truck.  It also features the rhino in cross-hairs logo to bring attention to the plight of one of the world's most endangered species.

It's a rugged looking watch at a reasonable sub-$100 price.

Timex Weekender Gift Set at Kohl's

I spotted this Timex Weekender gift set with interchangeable straps at Kohl's a few days ago.  It's a great preppy watch.  Since the color of the watch strap really sets the style and tone for each of these watches, the interchangeable strap set makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, the last time I tried a Timex Weekender with a canvas strap, the strap was a bit too short for my wrist.  For less than $60, this silver-tone watch set also has the makings of a good "boyfriend" watch for women.  Women may find the big dial and preppy colors appealing.

Instead, I own the "tachymeter" version of this watch.  It has tachymeter markings on the bezel.  You can read my review here--

If you'd like to buy the Timex Weekender Silver Tone Watch set, I actually found it online at Kohl's.  It might be a great buy for Mother's Day or Father's Day, you can check it out and buy it here --
