Watch Spotlight: The Diesel Master Chief

I've been drooling over Diesel watches quite a bit lately and I found this one on Amazon. It's the Diesel Master Chief. It's a 45mm diameter quartz watch with 100-meters of water resistance. It has the size and swagger that you'd expect from Diesel. I like this brand a lot due to their bold styling and general affordability.

[Since this post, as of November 2025, the price of this model has become the norm with a standard price set at around $160. I check this one from time to time to see if deals are available. It's a watch worth watching.

Watch Spotlight: Fossil Nate Chronograph

If you are looking for an impressive watch at an affordable price, check out the impressive 50mm Fossil Nate Chronograph. It's a very solid-looking stainless steel, quartz watch that with a matte black dial looks very good on the wrist.

This watch reminds me of my similarly sized Fossil Brox multifunction watch, but Nate brings a larger size and chronometer functions to the party. I have a slightly smaller Fossil Nate from a decade ago packed away from a move, it's a good watch. Amazon has quite an array of Fossil Nate variants and you can often find one on sale. There are different dial textures and colors and different hand colors. Nowadays, these Fossil watches have a full retail in the $140 to $220 range.  If you're interested, take a look at this Fossil Nate on Amazon. It's solid!

TGIF: Watches that Pass the Fast Food Worker Watch Test

They say men notice other men's watches.  That may be true, but it has been a long time since I attended a meeting in person.  I've been very fortunate to work from home since well before the pandemic.  It has its pros and cons.  The work-from-home lifestyle can be a little isolating.  Other than my wife and a few friends, I don't see that many people.  As a side effect, the people who are most likely to notice a watch that I'm wearing are fast food workers.  They will notice a watch during that quick exchange of debit or credit card for food at the window.

What watches have fast food workers noticed and complimented me on lately?

Two or three of my watches have garnered recent praise when I've been out and about town.  Amazingly, the watches haven't been my most expensive ones.  They've been watches that almost anyone can afford.

US Polo Association Green Diver-Style Watch

One watch that got noticed is my US Polo Association Diver Style watch. They should be able to notice it pretty easily since the watch comes in green and silver. The color combo really does pop. It got a "Nice watch, Sir," from a McDonald's worker on a late night cheeseburger run.

Made by Accutime, the US Polo Association Watch comes in a nice faux leather box with a stitched top and the familiar figure of a polo player.  The watch features a Japanese quartz movement, a non-rotating bezel, and cost less than $25 at a Ross or Burlington store.

Geoffrey Beene Blue Sapphire Watch

Another watch that passed the fast food worker test is my Geoffrey Beene Blue Sapphire Watch.  It garnered a "nice watch" from a worker at our best local Baskin-Robins ice cream shop.

Again, this is another low priced masterpiece coming in at only $22 at a local shop:  Burlington or Ross.

Wristwatch Review: Diesel Deadeye Watch

This Christmas, my wife got me a fashion forward Diesel watch from Belk.  This watch is called the Diesel Deadeye Watch (DZ4409) and, according to the Diesel website, it draws inspiration from vintage military instrument panels.

Diesel Deadeye Watch Design

In the beginning, Diesel watches were big and bold and seemed to be about the size of the alarm clock that typically hangs from rapper Flavor Flav's neck.  The brand brought 50 to 60 millimeter watch cases to the market and made this look great.

Now Diesel watches are taking those initial design queues and evolving in some interesting directions.  This watch is a prime example.  It's more than just big.  From the front, the Diesel Deadeye looks like a competently executed what with sub-dials.  But, the bezel makes it special.  It's transparent.  When you look at the bezel from certain angles, it magnifies the minute numbers.  From other angles, the transparent bezel makes the watch dial appear to be suspended in mid-air.  It's very cool!

The Diesel Deadeye watch also features a hinged crown guard which is a nifty feature for those of us who are prone to bang watches into thing.  It also adds to the interest level of this watch.

Of course, this watch also shares some common design themes that run through the Diesel line.

Diesel Deadeye Watch Dimensions

This watch is large.  It has a 51 by 56 millimeter diameter case that is 13 millimeters thick.  It is secured to the wrist by a supple black leather strap.  Despite the size, I didn't find this watch awkward or heavy.  It is quite comfortable.  The watch offers 5 atmospheres (150 feet) of water resistance.  However, I wouldn't recommend swimming or diving.  This is a fashion watch design.

Diesel Deadeye Watch Conclusion

Diesel watches make bold design statements and are designed to be noticed and draw commentary.  By that standard, the Diesel Deadeye (DZ4409) is a very successful design.  However, as bold as this watch is, it is understated enough for wear by watch lovers of all ages.  I like that this design wins with an innovative bezel and dial rather than sheer size and bling.  I find this watch interesting every time I glance at it.  That's why this Diesel is a great addition to any watch collection.  I highly recommend it.
