Wristwatch Review: Harry Williams Quartz Moon Phase Watch

Most of the elite dress watch makers offer watches with sophisticated moon phase complications. They offer old world charm, an easy way of knowing whether your watch is in the morning or evening and, usually, a whimsical smiling face or two. Earlier this year, I was able to score an outstanding deal on an affordable quartz moon phase watch from the upstart brand - Harry Williams.

The Harry Williams Moon Phase Quartz Watch

Harry Williams Watch Features

The primary feature of this watch is the moon phase subdial. It shows the sun during the day and the moon at night. The faces are exactly centered at noon and midnight. In the evenings the sun gives way to stars and then the moon.  In the early morning, the moon and stars give way to the sun's rays and then the sun.

Harry William Watch Construction

Construction is all stainless steel with 3 ATM (30-meter) water resistance. The watch comes with a leather strap and is also offered with a mesh bracelet. According to the Amazon copy, it has a mineral crystal or acrylic crystal.

Harry Williams Watch Style

Harry Williams was inspired by the contrasting personalities of the British Royal brothers:  Harry and William. The watch has a classic  minimalist design. The face is silver, not white as the Amazon copy says. Its contemporary dimensions make it feel like a modern watch while the sub-dial makes it feel old school. The applied batons are blue which matches the strap and makes the watch easy to read.

However, one thing is a little weird. The sun and moon phases appear upside down in their aperture. Is it intentional humor or poor quality control? It's humor, I think. The brand embraces the convention of classic silhouettes, but gives itself "the freedom to surprise."

Harry Williams Watch Dimensions

By my measurements, this watch is 40mm in diameter and 9 mm thick.  The strap is 18mm wide.

Overall Impression of the Harry Williams Moon Phase Watch

I like this watch.  It's whimsical, weird, modern, and traditional all at one time. It's also comfortable to wear, easy to read, and a little classy.

Where to Buy Harry Williams Watches

You can visit the Harry Williams Watches website (here) to see the full variety of models. You can get 10% off by joining their mailing list. Watch Deal Alert: Tommy Hilfiger 3H Quartz Watch - Blue Dial

I've found another great price on a Tommy Hilfiger 3H Quartz watch.  This time the deal is on a watch I already own.

This one is an attractive silver tone stainless steel watch with a blue sunray dial. It's currently 25% off on Amazon. With the Movado Group managing Chinese manufacturing and incorporating reliable Japanese quartz movements,  these watches are a solid value.

Tommy Hilfiger 3H Quartz Watch with Blue Sunray Dial (Amazon Photo)

This watch has a 42mm diameter case and 30-meters of water resistance. With the Amazon sale price, this watch sells for just under $90. However, there are many great deals on stable mates with other color and dial combinations. Most come in under $105.

I received this watch as a Christmas gift and can vouch for its quality. Amazon beats the department store price, but it's a great watch any way you get it. If you'd like to check this one out, you can get it via my Amazon affiliate link here. Your purchase will help support this blog and you'll get a watch that punches far above its price class.

Watch Spotlight: The Relic Jaden Men's Watch

In this time of inflation and economic insecurity, it's good to find some watch values that allow us to feed the collecting bug while being prudent. I recently found this great looking Relic Watch on Walmart.com. It has a purposeful retro watch look, a 43mm diameter allow case, 30-meters of water resistance, a stainless steel case back, and a quartz movement. It's available for $80 online with the biggest of the big box stores.

Relic Jaden Quartz Watch (Amazon photo)

$80 is a decent price for a watch that has a little bit of a Rolex Milgauss thing going on. Over the years, I've found that Relic consistently brings great looking watches to market.  While it's easy to dismiss Relic as a bargain Fossil, these are substantive watches that wear well and last.

While this model has disappeared from Amazon, you can see a wide variety of Relic watches for men here using this affiliate link to Amazon.

Watch Spotlight: AVI-8 Hawker Hurricane Automatic Aviation Watch

If you're looking for an interesting timepiece to add to your collection, you might look at the AVI-8 Hawker Hurricane Aviation watch. While the "flieger" design cues of a World War II aviation watch abound, the watch also includes styling cues to pay tribute to the Hawker Hurricane and the Battle of Britain. The tiny airplane silhouette at the rear of the second hand is just for fun.
AVI-8 watches are special timepieces that are still affordable. The JXB on the dial represents the Hawker Hurricane flown by Flight Lt. Arthur Victor Clowes--a Hurricane Ace with 11 confirmed victories.

The watch has a Japanese Automatic movement. It's a sizable watch with a 46mm case that is 14mm thick. It has a mineral crystal that is anti-reflective coated  It's also water resistant to 50-meters. (Only bad pilots need more.) The watch is secured via a 22mm diameter leather strap.

As an automatic, the AVI-8 Hawker Hurricane competes well with offerings from a variety of watchmakers. It comes in under $400. That's a great price for a special watch that few others are likely to have. Many pay more for exclusivity. AVI-8 also offers a wide variety of quartz models that are worthy of consideration. (I was given an AVI-8 Hawker Hurricane quartz model back in 2012 in exchange for a fair review.  You can read that review  here on this blog.

If you'd like to check this automatic watch out, use my affiliate link to the AVI-8 Hawker Hurricane Automatic here on Amazon before these watches fly away.

Attack of the Preppies: A Pair of Black Watches to Watch

When it comes to aggressive timepieces, everyone focuses on dedicated tactical and famed field watches that strike a paramilitary chord in our collective psyches. But, what if the real threat was the preppies? No one suspects them. But, we've seen the 80s movies. The preppy villains got their come uppance back then. But, they could strike back now. There could be a popped collar legion gathering strength right now.  They've got own stealthy watches. Let's look at a pair of preppy battle watches!
This Hilfiger 3-Hand Quartz watch (above) is a masterpiece of dark design. It's black with a 44mm diameter silicone case, a 24mm wide silicone strap, and a stainless steel case back. The watch is 11.1mm thick and offers 50-meter water resistance  It's also on sale for less than $60. You can check this great looking watch out here on Amazon!
If you think you can just flee from the preppies, you'd be wrong. The Crocodile is an ambush predator and this murdered out Lacoste 12:12 (above) screams danger, danger, danger! A preppy could emerge from the darkness and land a snide comment at any time. This watch has a black case made from TR90 Composite Material (plastic) with a stainless steel caseback and a silicone strap. Nice styling cues like a "petit pique" pattern in the center of the silicone strap and edges of the dial class this model up. The crocodile design on the caseback is the retro bomb!
The dimensions of the Lacoste 12:12 are perfect at 42mm in diameter and a slimmer 9.8mm thick with a 20mm strap to secure the timepiece to the wrist.  To see this great looking timepiece use my affiliate link to it here on Amazon!

Dream Watch: Hamilton Khaki Aviation Automatic

I recently saw an X post inquiring about this interesting aviation-inspired watch.

The timepiece turned out to be a Hamilton Khaki Aviation Automatic. It's a 45mm diameter watch on a genuine cow leather strap. Powered by the Swiss H-30 Automatic Movement, it has an 80-hour power reserve. It's in the same ETA movement family as the Tissot Powermatic 80. I found this watch on Amazon for just under $1400.  It's what I would classify as an achievable watch according to my scale here - Defining Watch Affordability.

Watch Deal Alert: Casio AE1200WH Series Digital Watch

Hello Mr. Bond. I see you are interested in a villainous timepiece from Casio. I'm not surprised. If you want a watch to track your network of orbital satellite weapons, track incoming drone attacks, and countdown to the moment the world must deliver your million dollars, you might start with the Casio AE1200WH World Time Illuminator Digital watch.

It can't do any of that, but it sure looks like the kind of watch a supervillain would wear. We'll set off sirens and alarm bells to announce a watch deal alert for 25% off on this watch. Now, it comes in at just under $30 on Amazon.

The real capabilities of the Casio are impressive. For example, the map is to help track world time across 31 timezones and 48 cities. The watch also offers 1/100 second stop watch, 5 alarms, an analog subdisplay, and backlighting. Physically, the watch offers 100-meter water and 10 years of battery life.

You can check out this super villain watch using my affiliate link here on Amazon. But, if you do, Mr. Bond, I expect you to buy.

Don't Hate Fossil Watches

There are plenty of watch collectors that don't like Fossil watches. I've probably been a little too dismissive of the brand myself. But, the Fossil hate is undeserved. I've never had any issues with the Fossil and Relic watches that I've bought.

Let's look at things Fossil has not done:

1. They haven't mislead me. I haven't seen the egregious triple the price of a watch so Fossil could put it "on sale."
2. They haven't put me on a waiting list. You don't have to wait a year to buy a Fossil.
3. Fossil hasn't coerced me into buying a watch I don't want in order to qualify to buy a watch I do want.
4. Fossil hasn't withdrawn unpopular watches from dealers and destroyed them to keep prices artificially high.

Now, let's look at things Fossil has done:

1. Fossil has provided a nice collector's tin with each watch I've bought.
2. Fossil outlet stores have provided great deals like Buy One / Get One in their outlet locations.
3. Fossil has built watches that are "on point" in design, price, and quality.

If there has ever been a reason to knock Fossil, it's been on the company's perceived lack of pedigree. They aren't a European brand. While there are some Swiss-made Fossil watches, the company primarily uses Asian sourcing. This basically boils down to watch snobbery and brand tribalism. A few layoffs and real financial hardships have knocked most of that nonsense right out of me. A cool looking, reliable, watch will suffice now.

Overall, Fossil watches have been a great value. You can check out all the Fossil watches for men on Amazon right here with my affiliate link.

Watch Deal Alert: Tommy Hilfiger Quartz 3H Watch

An awesome watch from Tommy Hilfiger is on sale right now for 40% off! I have a similar model that we bought at a department store for twice the price and it's been a great watch. Now, it's available with a black dial and matching leather strap. The word we need here is sharp! At a 40% off price less than $60? The next word we need is deal!
Hilfiger watches are made by Movado Group and offer much in terms of build quality and design consistency. They are built like watches rather than props. My Hilfiger watches feel and look good. The sunray dial design on this one is a nice plus that helps separate this watch from the pack.
This Hilfiger model features all stainless steel construction, a genuine leather strap, a mineral crystal, and practical 30-meter water resistance. That means rain and incidental splashes are OK, but swimming is not recommended.

I like these watches because they fit my wrist well. The watch has a 42mm diameter case that is 10mm thick. The strap is 22mm wide.

You can check this great looking watch out here on Amazon!

Watch Spotlight: MVMT Field II Field Watch

Some field watches have a history dating far back to 20th century wars. Others hang on the spikes and pitons of great adventurers and mountain climbers. Some jist look cool. The MVMT Field II Field watches promise that we can escape from the cubicle maze and set off on an epic adventure.

The MVMT Field II watch (Amazon photo)

The beauty of this watch is more than skin deep. It has stainless steel construction, a mineral crystal, and 100-meter water resistance. Inside a reliable Japanese  Miyota 2415 quartz movement provides accurate time and date functionality.
Dimensionally, the MVMT Field II comes in at 41mm in diameter and 11.5mm thick with a robust 22mm wide nylon textile  strap. The Field II is a very attractive field watch and a great California-designed  offering from a Movado Group brand.

If you are interested, you can see this MVMT watch here via my affiliate link to Amazon.

Vintage Inspired Watches - The Olev's Quartz Small Seconds Classic

The Look of A Classic Watch for Under $50

Everyone loves classic vintage watches. But, sometimes, service can be expensive when performance begins to lag or a watch stops entirely. That's when vintage-inspired modern watches can step up.  Even upstart brands bring vintage looks forward.
Olev's Classic Dress Watch with Small Hands (Amazon Photo)

The Olev's Vintage Leather Dress Classic (above) brings a small-seconds subdial to your wrist for well under $50. It leaves behind the tiny proportions of old watches with a 41mm diameter case that is 10mm thick. But, Arabic numerals ground the design with a vintage font. The watch also offers stainless steel construction, a genuine leather strap, and 30-meter water resistance.

If you'd like to check out this great offering from Olev's, use my Amazon affiliate link here to help support this blog.

Timex Under $60: Timex Men's Southview 41mm Watch

After a few problematic purchases in the extremely cheap watch department, it's nice to point out modestly priced watches from well known manufacturers like Timex. The Men's Timex Southview 41mm watch is an affordable offering from a maker that many of us rely on.

The Southview is a quartz watch that strikes a design balance between modern, minimalist, and traditional. With Roman numerals as markers it gives the wearer a bit of formality for church or the office. But, with a sparse dial and the lack of a date window, the watch hits the mark for minimalism. The openness of each Roman numeral and the lack of cross bars on those numerals provides a modern touch. Finally, the brown leather strap comfortably admits this watch to the business casual club. It's a big paragraph to say, "Balance."

The Southview has contemporary dimensions with a 41mm diameter case that is just 8.5mm thick. The genuine leather watch strap is 20mm wide. If this sense of balance appeals to you,  check out the Timex Southview here using my Amazon affiliate link.

TGIF: $10 Watch Lessons Learned

My most recent $10 Tuesday watch order was quite a disappointment. After several decent watches, the Alinker 36mm Square Dial watch was a very low quality and fragile timepiece. While I can be quite tolerant, the watch threw a spring bar from the clasp the very first time I tried to put it on. It'll be going back soon. It's not surprising to encounter some of the issues I posted about in the drawbacks of cheap watches. It might be more surprising that we encountered so few of the issues.

Alinker Square Dial Watch

This leaves me in a bit of a quandary.  I think we've exhausted the plausible $10 watch purchases on Amazon. It's time to move onto watches in the $20, $30, and dare I say $40 price ranges. The Ten Dollar Tuesday watch experiment hasn't been a total waste. Watches from Civo, Nibosi, Nuovo, EOJOMIN Gediyar, and Time100 all turned out to be pretty decent. One lesson that I've learned is that the quality of Chinese-brand watches is improving quickly. You can see most of the watches here on my Amazon affiliate store front.

Nibosi "Diamond" watch

Are there any good rules of thumb to follow when looking for a $10 watch? A Ten Dollar "on sale" watch from a company that usually sells $20 or $30 watches is a better bet than a watch that was always intended to be $10 or less. The Civo and Nibosi watches were the best of my purchases and both were originally intended to sell for $20 or $30.

You'll still see $10 watches on here from time to time, but I'm going to look for other low budget choices for watch enthusiasts.

Ten Dollar Tuesday: Avaner Skull Watch and Bracelet

It's Ten Dollar Tuesday and it's October.  If the prospect of an inexpensive Chinese watch isn't scary enough, let's get a spooky one! This Avaner Men's Quartz Skull watch with bracelet might fit the bill perfectly. It has Japanese quartz movement, a 46mm diameter case, a generously-sized leather strap, and comes with an accompanying bracelet with a skull charm.

Avaner Skull Watch and Bracelet Combo (Amazon Photo)

For an October / Halloween watch, $10 is a great deal. The main drawback to me is that the skeletonized hands may be a little difficult to reach.  But, truthfully, this watch is all about the skull. I suspect timekeeping is a secondary consideration. If you are interested in scaring up this timepiece, please feel free to use my Amazon affiliate link here.

I've had plenty of skull watches in my collection over the years. Some have had brand names like Ed Hardy attached. They always look cool. But, my Ed Hardy has condensation under the crystal and I'm pretty sure it cost about $20. If you're looking for a laughing skull this Halloween, you might not be taking too much of a risk. Just know that it is just a fun watch and not heirloom.

The Quartz Alternative: Tissot PRX.

The Tissot PRX is one of the most popular watch designs of recent years. It features an integrated bracelet and angular case that looks great. As an automatic watch, the Tissot PRX is powered by the state of the art Powermatic 80 movement which provides a reliable 80-hour power reserve. Not surprisingly, the automatic Tissot PRX typically costs at least $900. Fortunately, the Tissot PRX quartz model can be found for half that price.

Tissot PRX Quartz - Amazon photo

With the quartz Tissot PRX, you get the same great case, dial, and bracelet design as the automatic, but you don't have to fuss with watch winders.

The quartz PRX has all stainless steel construction, a sapphire crystal, and a 40mm diameter case that is 12mm thick. The result is a striking and robust timepiece with 100-meter water resistance.

Ten Dollar Tuesday: Alinker 36mm Square Dial Watch

If you'd like to save $129,990 over the price of a Patek Philippe Nautilus, read on. Amazon has the far less famous quartz Alinker 36mm Square Dial Men's Business Watch. It's a square watch with a date window and a striking resemblance to a Swiss watch none of us can afford.

According to the Amazon ad copy, the watch is made from stainless steel. A review says it is made from high quality plastic. Since this caused confusion and the watch cost less than $8, I just hit "buy it now." It's the kind of sacrifice this blog makes regularly for the sake of humanity.

My expectations for the Alinker Square Watch aren't high, but the low price tag will allow me to redirect $129,990 to investments and retirement. The watch is 36mm in diameter and only 8mm thick. It also has a quartz movement which will allow it to run for two or three years longer than an actual Patek Philippe Nautilus which only runs for 35 to 48 hours before tedious manual intervention is required.

I'll have the Alinker soon and we'll see how it does.

[This one came in earlier today October 6, 2026, and it is really cheap and cheesy.

The case is about 37mm in diameter amd 10mm thick. It is very lightweight and flimsy feeling. The bezel finish is scraped on the pavement rough. The watch fit, but  the spring bar on the clasp popped off with light handling.

I'd highly recommend looking at a Nibosi instead for $20 to $30.

On the plus side, Taiwan is probably safe for a while longer.]

I had high hopes, but I've removed the link on this one. I'd stay far away from it.

Quartz Watch Alternative - Longines Conquest

As an automatic, the Longines 41mm Conquest is priced above $2200. It's an achievable watch, but it will require perseverance, hard work, financial success, and a bit of good fortune. As an alternative, the quartz Longines 41mm Conquest is priced at less than $1000.

Longines 41mm Conquest Quartz (Amazon photo)

The Longines Quartz 41mm Conquest is a great looking and solidly built watch that exudes quality and class. It's not cheap. However, it's a much more attainable Longines watch than the automatic version.

What do you get when you buy the quartz Longines Conquest? You get a solid Swiss watch that can hold its own with the world's elite timepieces. The Conquest is an all stainless steel watch with a protected crown. It is secured to your wrist by a triple-safety-folding clasp and push piece opening mechanism. It's perfectly proportioned at 41mm in diameter and 11.8mm thick. It also has 300-meter water resistance and a sapphire crystal to withstand any adventure in your life. The caseback design also reflects the high end background of the watch.
Longines 41mm Conquest Quartz Case Back (Amazon photo)

Is the Longines Conquest worth it? Maybe. That's a question for you to answer.

If you've been plagued by a lust for a luxury Swiss watch, the quartz Longines Conquest might scratch that itch perfectly.

If you'd like to look and long for the Longines 41mm Conquest, you can check the Conquest out here using my affiliate link to the Luxury goods section of Amazon. It looks like a great watch.

Watch Deal Alert: 47mm Nautica Coronado Bay Watch

Nautica is on a roll as an affordable name brand watch. I just found another great Amazon deal on a Nautica N/83 watch. It's the Nautica Coronado Bay quartz watch. Nautica names many of their watches after famous beach areas.

The Coronado Bay presents a big watch in bio-based nylon case. The watch has a 47mm diameter case that's 16mm thick. It's not for the dainty watch crowd. But, it's a rugged looking watch offering 100-meter water resistance and that fits up to 8-inch wrists. It also has indiglo backlighting which is an indication of its Timex roots. I like the wave pattern in the dial background.

The Nautica Tortuga Bay Watch Deal

Right now, this Nautica Tortuga Bay watch is on sale for 45% off! That makes this  watch an amazing bargain for under $65! You can grab the Nautica N/83 Coronado Bay watch here using my Amazon Affiliate link!

Ten Dollar Tuesday: Lenqin Quartz Analog Watch

Ready to go Commando? This Lenqin 39mm Quartz Sport Watch looks the part. It's steel with a murdered out black design that looks really slick. I like it. However, it also does come in a half-dozen color and dial combinations including traditional gold and silver toned models.

Lenqin Quartz Analog Stainless Steel(?) Watch (Amazon photo)

The case is comfortably sized at 40mm in diameter and 10.5mm thick. The Lenqin Amazon ad copy claims a stainless steel case and bracelet in the text and on the caseback. However, the specification sheet says alloy steel. Inconsistencies aside, the watch offers practical 30-meter water resistance and a mineral glass crystal. Amazon copy notes that it's not for bathing, swimming, or diving.

It's a fashion watch for sure, but it has a great look. The dial is obviously inspired by great traditional watches like the Rolex Explorer 1 or Tudor Ranger. To read all the specifications and potentially buy this Lenqin watch, you can use my affiliate link to find it here on Amazon.
