TGIF: Should We Still Hate Stuhrling Original?

Stuhrling Original is a brand many watch enthusiasts love to hate. It's a New York based brand that claims inspiration from classic Swiss watchmakers. But, they pride themselves in making watches in modern Chinese watch factories. Many of their watches are obvious homages to classic models from brands like Rolex. Like Invicta, they have been infamous for greatly inflating the manufacturer's suggested retail prices of their watches in order to offer "incredible" discounts and sales prices.

My question: should we still hate Stuhrling Original? I'm not so sure that we should. Here are four reasons to consider buying a Stuhrling Original watch:

1. Good Watches.

Geopolitics aside, China makes pretty decent watches. Stuhrling isn't the only company making watches in that country. Many respected brands are manufacturing in China and many of the elite Swiss brands incorporate some degree of Chinese components. Stuhrling Original has been open about their Chinese manufacturing from early on. Some may consider that more honest than Switzerland's elite brands that have been very liberal about their interpretation of the "Swiss Made" definition that requires 60% of a watches economic value to be created in Switzerland.

2. Many Retailers Discount.

Stuhrling isn't the only company with high prices and steep discounts. Other watch brands offer big price markdown on Amazon and in other venues. Plus, there are whole department store chains that rely on perceived savings from sales, rewards bucks, and credit card price reductions. The hyperbole that seemed new and deceptive when Stuhrling Original started is commonplace now.  This Stuhrling Original was originally marketed as the Sturhling Original Concorso Raceway watch. Now, it's marked as being 77% off here on Amazon.

3. The World is Full of Homage Watches.

Some watch enthusiasts rail at perceived lesser brands like Invicta and Stuhrling Original because they make homage watches that look like much more expensive prestige watches. However, some of these old favorite watches were released decades ago and aren't fully protected by active patents. It's not surprising that many brands mimic the icons. You'll find rotating bezels and familiar dive watch markings on watches made by everyone from Armitron to Timex. This Stuhrling Original Depthmaster from Amazon fits right in there and at 76% off so does it's price. It costs exactly what a Chinese-made Rolex homage watch should at well less than $100.

4. Value for the Money.

The wealthy can continue to support the elite brands and I hope they always do. But, these elite brands have made it perfectly clear that they are not for the rest of us. We may dream. We may scrimp. We may save. But, for most of us, a prestige watch might not be a good use of scarce resources. In the meantime, Stuhrling Original watches are pretty good watches when you consider their actual sub-$100 prices. You can buy a nice looking watch for less than $100 and you can go on about your day.

Ultimately, we all have to make our own purchasing decisions. But, I'm not sure that we should blindly hate certain brands.

Watch Deal Alert: The Stuhrling Original Pro Dive Quartz Watch is 80% Off

If you're looking for an iconic dive watch style on a tight budget, you may find what you are looking for in the Stuhrling Original Pro Dive Quartz Watch for men. This 42mm timepiece evokes classics like the Omega Seamaster, but has its own design touches and fits right into the dive-style watch milieu. It has a magnifying cyclops bubble over the date window and it has a screw-down crown for a professional dive watch feel.  You can check this watch out here on Amazon.

Stuhrling Original Depthmaster Dive Watch

While this Stuhrling Original may be labeled Depthmaster Professional, it really only offers 100 meters of water resistance. This isn't the only bit of watchmaker hyperbole. The Amazon listing says that it is 80% off of the full retail price. However, full retail for this watch might be more appropriate at $100 instead of the claimed $395.  The watch is still a great deal because it is a sharp looking and selling for a smidge less than $80. If you are a normal person and don't hang out with Rolex or Omega enthusiasts who might go full watch snob on you, this is a decent watch for everyday wear. Plus, if you invest the $6,000 to $12,000 that you'd save over a Rolex or Omega, you might get rich enough to afford a ultra luxurious watch somewhere down the road of life.

Watch Find: Stuhrling Originals Depthmaster Dive Watch in Black

It has been awhile since a really sharp looking watch that's within my budget has caught my eye.  But, tonight, I was surfing along on Amazon and this black and gold beauty from Stuhrling Originals caught my eye.  It's the Stuhrling Original Depthmaster.

It's a nice looking timepiece that boasts 100 meters of water resistance, a sensible 42mm diameter case that is 14 millimeters thick, and a 20mm wide bracelet.  It's powered by a Japanese quartz movement that is protected from water by a screw down crown.

Amazon reviews for this Stuhrling are quite good with an average of 4.6 stars out of 5 for over 250 reviews.  Since this looks like an excellent deal, I've moved it to my wish list.

Two Watches that Look Like an Omega Seamaster

If you haven't read Nicholas Monserrat's classic novel of World War II, The Cruel Sea, you are missing out on a classic.  If you haven't owned an Omega Seamaster, you are missing out on yet another classic.  However, as of 2024, that classic Omega dive watch costs nearly $4500.  The Omega Seamaster is a great, legendary, watch that's available on Amazon.  Unfortunately, that watch is about $4400 out of my price range.

Affordable Alternatives to the Omega Seamaster

Fortunately, there are affordable watches that evoke the look of the classic Omega Seamaster.  These two watches by Stuhrling Original and by Invicta are standard "go to" watches for those inspired by the Omega, but stuck with an Alpha budget!

1. Stuhrling Original Men's Depthmaster Men's Dive Watch with Screw Down Crown.  This quartz watch is a little larger than a Omega Seamaster at 42 millimeters in diameter.  It does have a screw-down crown, a cyclops, and 100 meters of water resistance.  It gets 4.4 stars out of 5 on Amazon and delivers the aquatic look at an affordable price.  You can find this watch on Amazon.

2. Invicta Men's 23678 Pro Diver Automatic Watch with Silicone Band.  This watch draws from the Rolex Submariner and the Omega Seamaster to come up with a classic.  For example, the Invicta provides the automatic movement, a Rolex-style cyclops magnifier over the the date, the 40 millimeter diameter case, and 200 meters of water resistance.  It offers a a coin edge bezel similar to a Rolex.

Invicta 23678 Pro Diver with Silicone Band

While some collectors have a love/hate relationship with Invicta, I like the winged logo at 12 o'clock.  On Amazon, this watch averages 4.2 stars with over 1000 reviews and provides an automatic movement for less than $100.  You can find the Invicta 23678 Pro Diver on Amazon.
