Watch Spotlight: Caravelle Men's Retro Quartz Dress Watch

A few weeks ago, I saw a Bulova Accutron II Surveyor watch in a local pawn shop. It was a nice looking timepiece with a vintage look. I posted about it here in this Watch Spotlight. It looked like a cool watch, but vintage watches come with their challenges. I wondered if a modern watch might capture some of that vintage feel.  One watch that comes close is this Caravelle Retro Quartz watch.

This watch has a vintage feel due to it unique tonneau case shape, slightly domed crystal, gold tone, and leather band. The hands are slender as is appropriate for a dress watch. The watch has an accurate Miyota quartz  movement.  It also offers 50-meters of water resistance for extra security on a rainy day. As a modern version of retro, the case for this Caravelle is 39.9mm in diameter and 10.2mm thick. It offers plenty of wrist presence.

Wristwatch Review: Timex Waterbury Traditional 40mm Watch

Timex has been offering more and more watches that are aimed at watch enthusiasts. They've also been moving upmarket with new collections like the Timex Atelier collection. The Timex Waterbury Collection is a collection that marks the beginning of collector recognition.  If you like watches, they made some nice ones just for us. The Waterbury Collection nods towards Timex history and start as the Waterbury Clock Company in 1854. Most Waterbury watches show a vintage style and a connection to the brand's rich history. Today, I'm going to review one of my favorite watches: the Timex Waterbury Traditional 40mm watch. You can also find this sometimes listed as the Timex Standard 40mm 3-Hand Watch.

The Timex Waterbury Traditional has a 40mm diameter case, 50-meter water resistance, a mineral glass crystal, and a leather strap, and a quartz movement. It does not have Indiglo Backlighting. It's traditional. That sounds pretty standard right? But, there's more.

As I said with my Waterbury GMT Classic, the great thing about the Timex Waterbury Collection is that it comes with high-end design details. It's the little things, the details, that make this watch right. I really like the following design details:

This watch has an all stainless steel case and mineral glass crystal. It also has a genuine leather strap. It's built to be water resistant to depths of 50 meters. This watch feels well-built for everyday wear, but also dressy. It's not the watch to wear when leading a commando raid. But, it feels like a great value.

The Timex Waterbury Standard watch has a sensibly-sized 40mm diameter case that is 9.5mm thick. The strap is 20mm wide and fits up to 8-inch wrists. The watch is well proportioned for a dress watch. It's perfectly sized for any office attire.

I love this watch and I want to shout from the roof tops about how great it is.  It looks like a million bucks! But, I'm afraid to say that out loud because Timex might charge me a million bucks for their next one. This watch feels quite special for a Timex. It has wonderful details. It is practical and comfortable and well constructed. It is also still budget friendly. I've seen variants of this watch at prices from $44 to $94 or so.

Watch Spotlight: Bulova Men's Modern Millenia Automatic Ceramic Watch

The automatic watch is the epicenter of watch-making tradition. Usually, we embrace that, but sometimes it's nice to see a thoroughly modern take on the automatic. The Bulova Men's Modern Millenia Automatic Ceramic Watch (shown below) is a three-hand 21-jewel automatic with a partial open aperture in the front and an exhibition caseback revealing the mechanism.

The watch features a ceramic case and bracelet, an edge-to-edge domed crystal, gold-tone accent markings, and a classic subdial with a second hand.  The watch has a 42-hour power reserve when fully wound. The watch case is 41.5mm in diameter and it stands a little tall at 13.2mm thick.  One Amazon reviewer noted that the lug-to-lug measurement of this watch is a little large at 53.8mm. By having only a partial aperture on the watch face, the watch is more readable than a full skeleton watch and there is room for the vaunted Bulova tuning fork logo.

Overall, this Bulova is a modern watch from a known brand at a good price. Check it out here on Amazon. There's only one problem. The seller says there is only one left!

Ten Dollar Tuesday: The Kakabi Minimalist Men's Watch

One glaringly obvious truth in the watch world is that China can produce a perfectly good wristwatch.  If you aren't trying to make a socio-economic statement or support old world craftsmen, an inexpensive watch that looks good and tells time is sufficient for most people. The Kakabi Minimalist dress watch for men may be a good choice for the basic time-telling mission and it fits within our $10 watch pricing criteria.

In the looks department this watch competes well with the Timex Easy Reader and Casio Men's Standard Watches. The watch has a generously-sized 40mm diameter case, easy to read numerals, 304-grade stainless steel case, and a Japanese quartz movement. While some purchasers, aren't happy with the longevity of this watch, the Kakabi gets 4.4 stars overall out of 205 ratings. Watch Spotlight: Invicta Quartz Pro Diver Black Watch

Invicta is Back in Black!

If you have an active imagination, a quick glance at your wristwatch can be enough to send you anywhere in the world from the casinos of the French Riviera to SCUBA diver commando work in faraway harbors. The more prestigious brands have taken advantage of our fantasies and associated their watches with the James Bond movie franchise, historic adventurers like Jacques Cousteau and Sir Edmund Hillary, and even actual military units. Of course, these glamorous associations don't help the rest of us. We just need a rugged watch that look cool and that we can all afford.  Enter the Invicta Quartz Pro Diver. First, we'll check the version offered on Amazon. It is model 90302. It is 44mm in diameter and 12mm thick. It has luminous hands and hour markers. It's a great take on classic dive watch style. It also delivers with 200-meters of water resistance and a unidirectional rotating bezel. Invicta claims this watch is suitable for SCUBA diving and professional water activities. This Pro Diver strays from the classic dive watch homage and dive watch performance, but it offers bold luminous hands and markers in a big and bold 46mm diameter format. This one makes a couple of compromises in the name of style with water resistance dropping to 50-meters and I suspect that the bezel is non-rotating. The price is stunningly low. If you don't have a fortune and you want a cool looking watch, these Invicta models are worth examining.

 

Ten Dollar Tuesday: Nuovo Men's Classic Quartz Watch

If you are looking for a classic watch look in an inexpensive package, check out the Nuovo Men's Classic Quartz watch. It's a quartz watch with a 41mm dial that is 10mm thick.

The watch has a familiar field watch dial layout. While the advertising copy mentions stainless, the case and bracelet are both alloy metals. Nuovo claims that this watch is water resistant to 30 meters. Several dial color combinations are available. There is another dial arrangement and one with a 50% off special. Watches A to Z: US Polo Assn

The US Polo Association was founded in 1890 and is the governing body for the sport of polo in the United States. The association itself is a non-profit entity. However, it also owns the for profit subsidiary USPA Global Licensing Inc. (also sometimes called USPA Properties Inc). This for profit subsidiary manages the US Polo Association brand around the world (190 countries) and in 1100+ outlets. Some of the profits are funneled back to the US Polo Association to support outreach and other non-profit activities. While the brand is used on apparel, luggage, footwear and more, as watch enthusiasts we're most interested in the brand's watches.

US Polo Assn watches were introduced at Baselworld in 2009. While they are generally too inexpensive to garner monied watch collector attention, sometimes they look like a million bucks! I find US Polo Assn watches online and at brick-n-mortar retailers like Burlington, JC Penney, and Ross. I've never had any quality issues with my US Polo Assn watches. They are typically a good buy for the money.

In the United States, US Polo Assn watches are manufactured by Accutime. The company has a long history of producing affordable timepieces that work well and look good. Most US Polo Assn watches have design elements that include a polo pony and rider and a US Polo Assn in a standard font.  However, the brand has some watches that branch out and omit the pony and rider. In the US, we are used to seeing US Polo Assn watches in a budget friendly $15 to $30 price range. However, in Europe, the brand is sold through Eurotrade s.r.l. In my few glimpses of US Polo Assn watches sold in the UK, it appears that the watches start at affordable levels and go upwards. The price range might be $50 to $150 with potentially better quality levels and features.

The key take away from a look into the watches of brand like US Polo Assn is that there are lots of interesting watches to collect in this world. You can define price ranges that are comfortable for you and you can pick brands that fit your sense of style and your personal preferences. Watch Strap Review: ULLCHRO Genuine Leather Watch Strap

Sometimes affording a new watch from a premium brand is no small feat. Fortunately, there are low-cost ways to spiff up your watch collection. I recently noticed that the strap of my old Tissot Carson was deteriorating and no longer fully securing my watch. I tried a stopgap fix with fabric glue, but that just made a mess.  Then I started searching Amazon. I found this ULLCHRO Genuine Leather Watch Strap with alligator grain, stainless steel buckle, and soft brown rubberized calfskin.

The 19mm wide strap fit my watch perfectly. At 200mm long, the strap also fit my wrist fairly well. There's not much room to spare, but the original strap was similarly proportioned.

The strap has a quick release spring bars for easy installation and easy strap swaps in the future. I like the simple but ornate buckle design that evokes the shape of a shield.
